Advertisement Analysis: Bad 7/15 [Volkswagen]

ruin a good purchase with a bad one

Cons:

  • It's hard to understand what the copywriting and the picture have to do with each other
  • I don't understand what a "good purchase" and a "bad one" refers to. Is a good purchase more expensive? Is it more useful? Is it bigger?
  • If I assume that the bonsai is the "good purchase" and the chain saw the "bad one", I guess this is saying that if you buy a bonsai, don't buy a chainsaw to prune it. Possibly due to my Singaporean context, it doesn't make sense as I do not associate chain saws with trees, let alone bonsai. That said, I think this will probably make more sense to American men. Still, since guys will probably be more attracted to the chainsaw than the bonsai, won't they get the "good purchase" mixed up with the "bad one"?

Pros:

  • The design is clean and simple.

Overall:

This is one of those ads that make you scratch your head. There are others in the same series that make more sense but sadly, this one just doesn't. The concept is a good one except better examples need to be given. Maybe a white blouse and spaghetti? The results of having a "good purchase with a bad one" needs to also be communicated.
